Frequently Asked Questions

GGW Virtual Mentorship Program – Powered by OneUpOneDown

Getting Started

Q:What is OneUpOneDown?

A:OneUpOneDown is a Mentorship program that specializes in creating meaningful mentorship connections for any gaming industry professional, tailored to their unique learning and development goals.

Q:Who can join the mentorship platform?

A:Any gaming industry professional in the gaming industry who is a member of Global Gaming Women who is interested in being a mentor, a mentee, or both.

Q:Do I have to be a member of GGW to participate?

A:Yes, as this is a GGW membership benefit. If you are not yet a member of GGW, you can join here. There is no cost to join; membership to GGW is complimentary.

Q:How do I create my profile?

A:

When you create your account, you will be asked to Login to your profile, and complete the following steps. This takes an average of 5-30 minutes.

  1. Choose your role. You can select "Mentee", "Mentor" or "Mentor & Mentee".
  2. Basic information. We will collect basic information about you to help find your match.
  3. Professional experience. Your work experience is instrumental in finding an aligned match.
  4. Discovery questions. Your answers help discover your specific and unique experience, needs and characteristics, which lead to a highly personalized match.
  5. Experience mapping. This is the final step, where we map your experience. We make matches based on the cross-over between a mentor's current experience and a mentee's desired experience.

Q:How do I get matched?

A:After you complete your profile, OneUpOneDown uses a matching algorithm to pair you with a mentor or mentee based on shared goals, skills, and interests. Once you're matched, both parties will receive a match proposal via email, which will direct you to review and confirm the match in the mentorship platform. Once both parties accept the match, your mentorship begins. If either party rejects the match, a new match will be proposed.

Q:What is "near-peer" mentorship?

A:Near-peer mentorship is where mentors are an average of 3-5 years ahead of a mentee, or just a couple of life stages ahead of them. This form of mentoring results in highly relevant guidance and enhances both the mentor's and mentee's ability to relate to one another.

Q:Can I sign up to be a mentor if I have never mentored anyone before?

A:Yes! You'll be amazed at the value you can offer to someone who's just a few steps behind you. You've already faced some of the decisions they're about to make, and regardless of whether you made the right choice or not, you've got an outcome to learn from. By taking the time to listen to your mentee, reflect on your own experiences, and openly share what you wish you'd known at the time, you'll be able to offer real value.

Bonus: Our Mentor Guide provides a framework for being an effective mentor.

Q:How can I use the dashboard to request and track meetings? Will the other party be notified when I request a meeting?

A:

Once you are in a match, you will be able to track and take actions related to the match in what is called the 'Match Management Tool'. You can access this by selecting 'My mentors' or 'My mentees' from the left-hand menu, then clicking the button 'Manage match progress' for the relevant match.

From here, you can:

  • Book a meeting with your mentor or mentee by selecting a time on their calendar. A notification will then be sent to your mentor or mentee to let them know that a time has been booked.
  • Record meetings and provide feedback on the match progress - your feedback will help us to know the match is progressing well, and to continuously improve our matchmaking process.
  • Take notes for each meeting, so you have a record of what you discussed.
  • Request feedback from your mentor or mentee to help you improve.
  • Access mentorship tips as you progress through your match.

Account & Login

Q:Can I log in using my GGW membership credentials?

A:No. The mentorship platform is separate from your GGW membership. You will need to create a new account on the mentorship platform to get started.

Q:I tried logging in, but it says my email isn't recognized. What should I do?

A:This likely means you haven't created a mentorship account yet. Please visit the sign-up page and follow the steps to register.

Q:I forgot my password. How do I reset it?

A:On the login page, click "Forgot password?" and follow the prompts to reset your password using your email.

Mentorship Process

Q:How long does each mentorship match last?

A:Each match lasts three months by default. At the end of the three months, if you keep your profile status as available, you will be matched with a new mentor or mentee. If you decide you'd like to continue with a match beyond three months, please email [email protected].

Q:What if my match isn't a good fit?

A:No worries! You can request a rematch at any time. Contact [email protected] if you'd like support.

Q:How often should I meet with my mentor/mentee?

A:The recommended structure of the mentorship is for mentors and mentees to meet a minimum of four times within the three-month match period - twice in the first month and once in each of the last two months. However, you are welcome to meet more frequently if this is suitable for both mentor and mentee. We suggest scheduling your next meeting immediately after the previous one to keep the momentum going.

Q:What if I am unavailable to participate in the program for a period?

A:If you become unavailable for an extended time, you can pause your account under the Settings option in the menu in the mentorship platform. When you become available again, update your status to show that you are available. If you are in a match and become unavailable, please email [email protected], and the team will arrange for the existing match to end.

Q:What if I decide that I want to change my status from a mentee to a mentor, or both?

A:You can easily change your status in the mentorship platform. Select 'My information' from the left-hand menu and choose your status from the drop-down menu.

Q:I'm having trouble with the site or getting an error message. What should I do?

A:If you're having issues signing in or navigating the platform, please email [email protected] and their support team will assist you directly.
